Have a look at the training in Learning. That'll cover most of the basics, and there are a few bits on mesh resolution too. 

Re the diffusion. Consider the graph you showed above. That's made from 10-20 data points. If I were to take the curve and make a table with 3 points and then plot that would I expect to get an accurate representation of the original graph?
