Cogging is the oscillatory torque caused by the tendency of the rotor to line up with the stator in a direction where the reluctance of the magnetic circuit "seen" by the magnets is minimum.

Ansys EmployeeHi -There are many ways to measure cogging. The simple method is by using torque transducer. Cogging torque exists even when there is no stator current and is always measured in zero stator current condition.

Ansys EmployeeYou can predict the Cogging torque during design using Ansys RMxprt and Maxwell tools.
