I am using ANSYS Maxwell 3D to simukate the electric potential around a single trapped ion, I want to understand how the geometry around it effects the potential.
As far as I know there is no way to create a point charge excitation is this correct?
I have been getting by, by creating a small sphere and applying 1e charge excitation to it, but this solution is inconsistent as if the sphere is too small then then the simulation returns zero potential everywhere (no matter how much I mesh around it), but if I make the ball to big then it becomes unrealistic and I notice the results change as the ball grows. Does anyone have any ideas for a more elegant solution to this problem. I understand its quite a fringe application...

Hello Harry,
Could you show model's excitation? Do you have 0/- voltage or charge? If only having 1e charge in the model, there is no potential.Â
