SubscriberHi all. Guys, please tell me, what is the hardest plastic you know? I want to replace some steel parts with plastic ones. Steel has a yield strength of 500.

When replacing steel components with plastic several factors need to be taken into account, including the specific requirements of the application. Here are a few plastic materials commonly used as alternatives to steel:
Polycarbonate (PC):
- Yield Strength: 55 MPa to 75 MPaÂ
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS):
- Yield Strength: 35 MPa to 60 MPa
Polyamide (Nylon):
- Yield Strength: 50 MPa to 90 MPaÂ
Polyethylene (PE):
- Yield Strength (HDPE): 15 MPa to 25 MPa (2,200 psi to 3,600 psi)
Polypropylene (PP):
- Yield Strength: 25 MPa to 50 MPaÂ
Please consult the material data sheets for more accurate material property.

Ansys EmployeeHi, why not looking into the family of reinforced polymer composite? If you use Granta selector, you can easily compare hardness of different polymers in an Ashby Chart. And you can even design you own composite using the Synthesier in Selector or Material Designer.
