This course covers the fundamentals and applications of microwave engineering in various communication systems. It begins with an exploration of radar systems, their configurations, frequency bands, and the radar equation. For instance, students learn how Doppler radar combines pulse radar techniques to determine a target's range, velocity, and angular position. The course also delves into the challenges of distinguishing a true target from clutter returns in pulse radar. The second part of the course focuses on cellular communication systems, explaining how they achieve high system capacity with limited radio spectrum. For example, it discusses the evolution of wireless cellular technology from the first to the upcoming fifth generation. Lastly, the course explores the applications of microwave frequencies in satellite communication, discussing the history, growth, uses, and functioning of communication satellites. It also highlights the industrial and medical applications of microwaves.

This course has been developed by Dr. Ratnajit Bhattacharjee from IIT Guwahati for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://nptel.ac.in/courses/108103141.
