Round Jet Impinging on a Heated Flat Plate — Homework

Overview

Impinging jets are widely using in several commercial cooling applications, including thermal management of electronics, cooling hot sheets of annealed metal and in conventional manufacturing methods such as lathe and milling machines. A jet of cold fluid is discharged from a nozzle such that it impinges on a hot surface. After impingement, the free jet transforms into a wall jet and flows over the surface to extract heat This leads to enhanced heat transfer which is primarily caused by forced convection. Depending on the application, the jet fluid is either a gas or liquid. The overall heat transfer is further enhanced by arrays of impinging jets, instead of a single jet; these arrays are often preferred in most engineering applications.

Objectives

In this homework problem, we will learn to simulate a single round air jet impinging on a hot circular flat plate using Ansys Fluent. After simulating this cooling application, you will be able to identify the various zones of interest in a single round jet. We will also discuss the heat transfer results and compare them with correlations from the literature.

Setup

Download the Mesh file required for setting up the simulation and associated Case & Data files here. Follow the instructions below to set up this simulation in Ansys Fluent starting with the Mesh file. In case you face any issues setting up or running the simulation, refer to the corresponding initial and final Case and Data files.

Results and Discussion

Let’s now look at the results to understand the heat transfer between the impinging round jet and the flat plate.
