In this lesson, our focus is on analyzing the heat transfer behavior in some external flows such as cross-flow over a cylinder, flow over a tube bank and impinging jet flows. Though these cases appear simple, a deep understanding of their heat transfer characteristics can be extremely useful in the preliminary design phase of heat exchangers and other types of cooling systems. For example, the performance of an industrial shell and tube heat exchanger can be predicted to reasonable accuracy by using correlations obtained from analyzing the flow over the tube bank.
