This best practice guide focuses on optimizing CFD simulations of vehicle lamps using Ansys Fluent® fluid simulation software. It covers strategies for minimizing numerical errors, selecting appropriate physical models, and generating high-quality meshes to accurately capture airflow, heat transfer, and condensation effects within lamp assemblies.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this Application Best Practice (ABP), you will be able to:

  • Apply efficient meshing workflows for vehicle lamp assemblies using Fluent Meshing, including wrapper-based, CFD surface mesh, and hybrid approaches.
  • Configure thermal simulations for traditional and LED vehicle lamps by selecting suitable physical models, radiation models, and boundary conditions.
  • Analyze radiative heat transfer through opaque and semi-transparent components using DO, Monte Carlo, and Non-Gray radiation modeling techniques.
  • Simulate condensation and evaporation phenomena using Species Transport and Eulerian Wall Film models to evaluate lamp fogging and defogging behavior.
  • Implement convergence assessment and computational efficiency strategies to obtain accurate thermal and moisture transport predictions while reducing simulation time.

Prerequisites:

  • Ansys Fluent software Beyond the Basics.
  • Basic knowledge of CFD and heat transfer.
  • Understanding of radiation modeling concepts.
  • Experience analyzing CFD simulation results.

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2021R2 release.

Application Best Practices (ABPs) outline engineering design goals for specific applications and provide guidance for how to achieve those goals using Ansys simulation software. It is important to note that a Geometry File or other Input Files are not always available. ABPs, as opposed to the official training-material workshops/tutorials, are not meant to be a step-by-step instruction document. ABPs are a link between product-based training courses and application specific tutorials, educating on the "how" and "why" of the best modeling approach, highlighting best practices and workflows for a particular application.
