This tutorial explains how Motor-CAD Functional Mock-Up Units (FMUs) from Ansys Motor-CAD® dedicated electric motor design tool for multiphysics simulation can be used to model the electromagnetic and thermal performance of electric machines within a system level simulation.

In this example Ansys Twin Builder® simulation-based digital twin platform and MATLAB/Simulink are used to demonstrate this functionality. The model uses the Functional Mock-Up Interface (FMI) standard so many other system simulation tools can be used in a similar way.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this workshop, you will be able to:

  • Understand the role of Motor-CAD FMUs in system-level simulations.
  • Configure and use different Motor-CAD FMU types.
  • Integrate Motor-CAD machine models into Twin Builder and Simulink.
  • Perform coupled electromagnetic and thermal system simulations.
  • Analyze and validate simulation results.
  • Extend system models using custom parameters and scripting.

Prerequisites:

  • Getting Started with Ansys Motor-CAD Software course.

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2026 R1 release.
