This Application Best Practice (ABP) delivers a hands-on guide to simulating Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOECs) in Ansys Fluent® fluid simulation software. It walks you through setup, modeling, and performance analysis covering everything from electrochemistry and heat management to voltage control and mesh strategies. Whether you are optimizing hydrogen production or refining simulation workflows, this ABP equips you with the tools to get accurate, reliable results fast.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this Application Best Practice (ABP), you will be able to:

  • Understand the operational principles of Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOECs), including the electrochemical reactions at the anode and cathode.
  • Differentiate between SOEC and SOFC technologies, including their structural, functional, and voltage application differences.
  • Configure and simulate SOEC models in Ansys Fluent software using both unresolved and resolved electrolyte approaches.
  • Apply appropriate boundary conditions and initialization techniques for voltage, species, and protonic potential in SOEC simulations.
  • Analyze key performance metrics such as current density, steam utilization, temperature distribution, and polarization curves.
  • Implement thermal management strategies to maintain safe operating conditions and prevent material degradation in SOEC systems.
  • Optimize simulation workflows by using solution-steering strategies and staged parameter tuning for improved convergence and accuracy.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic Ansys Fluent software solver functionality and basic knowledge of working principles in fuel cells and electrolyzers are recommended.
  •

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2025R1 release.

Application Best Practices (ABPs) outline engineering design goals for specific applications and provide guidance for how to achieve those goals using Ansys simulation software. It is important to note that a Geometry File or other Input Files are not always available. ABPs, as opposed to the official training-material workshops/tutorials, are not meant to be a step-by-step instruction document. ABPs are a link between product-based training courses and application specific tutorials, educating on the "how" and "why" of the best modeling approach, highlighting best practices and workflows for a particular application.
