This course describes how to simulate dust and contaminant filtration with coupled CFD–DEM methods to predict contaminant arrestance, pressure-drop evolution, and filter service life. It compares unresolved filter representations with the fully-resolved approach, then walks through the workflow — domain setup, filter preparation and clean-air calibration, contaminant injection, coupled-simulation setup, post-processing, and sensitivity analysis.
Learning Outcomes:
Following completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Select the appropriate filter modeling approach, from unresolved representations to fully-resolved meshing.
- Build the coupled workflow by creating the case in Ansys Fluent® fluid simulation software first and linking it into Ansys Rocky™ particle dynamics simulation software as a two-way coupling.
- Prepare the filter medium to the target porosity and calibrate its permeability against clean-air pressure-drop data.
- Define the contaminant particles for feasible simulation run times.
- Interpret pressure drop and contaminant arrestance results, and parameterize them for automated analysis.
Prerequisites:
- Specific knowledge needed: DEM, CFD, 2-way DEM-CFD coupling.
- Specific training you should read/follow: Ansys Rocky Tutorials #1 – Transfer Chute, #2 - Static Angle of Repose Test, #14 – Fluidized Bed (CFD-DEM coupling), Ansys Fluent Tutorials #3 Modeling Flow Through Porous Media.
Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2026R1 release.
