This Application Best Practice (ABP) provides a step-by-step guide for coupling Ansys Fluent® fluid simulation software and Microsoft Excel using Ansys PyFluent, enabling efficient management of simulation parameters such as boundary conditions and heat flux values through Excel spreadsheets. The workflow involves launching Ansys Fluent software via Python, reading boundary data from Excel, and applying it dynamically using Ansys PyFluent, with all necessary files and libraries organized in a local Python environment. It covers simulation setup, solver configuration, and post-processing, demonstrating how Excel can serve as a user-friendly interface for controlling complex CFD simulations involving industrial geometries like fuel cells and gas turbines.

Learning Outcomes:

Following completion of this Application Best Practice (ABP), you will be able to:

  • Understand how to launch and control Ansys Fluent software using Python and the Ansys PyFluent interface.
  • Learn to define and manage boundary conditions and heat flux values through structured Excel inputs.
  • Apply Python scripting to automate simulation setup, including solver configuration and physics modeling.
  • Integrate Excel and Ansys Fluent software workflows to streamline parameter control for complex CFD geometries.
  • Gain insight into post-processing setup and validation techniques using Ansys Fluent software and optional PyAnsys modules.

Prerequisites:

  • Get Started with Ansys Fluent
  • Getting Started with PyFluent
  • PyFluent documentation 0.35.0 — PyFluent

Please note: These training materials were developed and tested in the 2025R2 release.

Application Best Practices (ABPs) outline engineering design goals for specific applications and provide guidance for how to achieve those goals using Ansys simulation software. It is important to note that a Geometry File or other Input Files are not always available. ABPs, as opposed to the official training-material workshops/tutorials, are not meant to be a step-by-step instruction document. ABPs are a link between product-based training courses and application specific tutorials, educating on the "how" and "why" of the best modeling approach, highlighting best practices and workflows for a particular application.
