Modern engineering platforms—vehicles, aircraft, ships, handheld devices, and IoT systems—frequently rely on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) antennas as practical, cost-effective RF solutions. Although these antennas are readily available and easy to procure, integrating them into real platforms presents significant electromagnetic challenges. When installed on large or complex structures, an off-the-shelf antenna may experience performance degradation due to nearby materials, mounting hardware, platform geometry, and coupling with other onboard antennas. Unlike custom antennas, which are designed considering the final host environment, COTS antennas often lack the detailed simulation models or measurement data needed for accurate prediction of their installed performance.

This short course focuses on practical, engineering-ready techniques for bringing off-the-shelf antennas into Ansys HFSS for further simulation, including antenna placement, platform interaction studies, and antenna-to-antenna coupling analysis. We explore multiple approaches to overcome the common challenge of missing vendor models or radiation data—starting from using encrypted HFSS models when available, through importing vendor far-field and near-field measurements into HFSS SBR+, to reconstructing equivalent antenna models using the HFSS Antenna Toolkit. For scenarios where no vendor data exists, we also cover how to perform your own far-field and near-field measurements and integrate these results into HFSS for high-fidelity installed performance studies.
