Overview
This session presents a comprehensive overview of simulation-driven optical design workflows for healthcare applications using Ansys Optics. It will demonstrate how ray optics, wave optics, and Multiphysics simulations are combined to design, analyze, and optimize advanced medical devices across imaging, sensing, and therapeutic domains. The session is structured around three key application areas. First, imaging systems and diagnostics, including X‑ray imaging, endoscopic and ophthalmic systems, advanced microscopy, and surgical lighting, where ray tracing and system‑level modeling are used to evaluate image quality, illumination uniformity, and performance under realistic anatomical and operating conditions. Second, wearable health monitoring and biophotonics, focusing on photoplethysmography (PPG)‑based optical heart rate sensors and pulse oximeters, where light–tissue interaction, motion artifacts, and thermal effects are modeled through coupled optical, thermal, and mechanical simulations. Third, surgical and therapeutic solutions, including laser‑based treatments and UV disinfection systems, where accurate modeling of light delivery, energy deposition, and safety is critical. Attendees will also see how Zemax OpticStudio, Lumerical, Speos, and System Coupling are integrated into unified workflows, leveraging Zemax HPC for large‑scale design exploration and Multiphysics reliability analysis. These examples highlight how simulation enables accurate performance prediction, reduces prototyping effort, and accelerates innovation in next‑generation healthcare systems.
What attendees will learn
- Biomedical imaging workflows: X-ray, endoscopy, advanced microscopy, surgical lighting, Ophthalmic design (human eye modeling, presbyopia correction, retinal imaging)
- Biophotonics & sensing: PPG modeling, optical heart rate sensors, pulse oximetry, light–tissue interaction
- Multiphysics simulation: optical–thermal–mechanical coupling, device robustness
- Metalens & nanophotonics: FDTD + ray-tracing co-design workflows
Who should attend
- This webinar is intended for optical, biomedical, and R&D engineers developing medical imaging systems, wearable sensors, and ophthalmic devices. It is particularly relevant for professionals working on endoscopy, X-ray imaging, biosensing, and vision correction systems who need accurate system-level performance prediction under realistic conditions.
- Engineers will benefit from understanding how to connect traditionally separate domains—ray tracing, wave optics, and Multiphysics—into a unified workflow. Those working on wearable healthcare devices will gain insight into modeling light propagation in biological tissues alongside motion and thermal effects. Researchers and advanced users will also benefit from exposure to hybrid workflows combining Zemax OpticStudio, its HPC capabilities, Lumerical FDTD, and Speos for multi-scale optical design and validation.
