NPTEL

width=This course covers the comprehensive understanding of support excitation in structures and its impact on various systems. It begins with the exploration of how forces are induced in a structure due to the displacement of the base, using real-life examples such as the effect of an earthquake on a building or the jerking felt in a vehicle on a rough road. The course further delves into the response of continuous systems like aircraft wings to base excitation, focusing on significant responses caused by different types of excitations. It introduces the concept of a basic oscillator and its response to tangent forces, and the construction of a shock spectrum. The course also covers the calculation of peak displacement using the response spectrum for displacement, velocity, and acceleration, and its importance in earthquake regression design. The course concludes with the development of response spectrum for pulse wave and its application in seismic motion or building subjected to ground acceleration, illustrated with an example of a cantilever pool subjected to a half sine pulse wave.

This course has been developed by Prof. Sudip Talukdar from IIT Guwahati for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://nptel.ac.in/courses/105103221.
