width=This course covers the comprehensive understanding of signal propagation and its impairment due to atmospheric effects. It delves into the impact of the ionosphere, troposphere, and rain on signal propagation, and how these effects can be mitigated for effective communication. For instance, the course uses the example of raindrops and how their size and shape can cause signal absorption and depolarization, affecting the overall quality of communication. The course also explores the concept of specific attenuation and how it is influenced by factors such as frequency, polarization, and rain rate. Furthermore, it provides an in-depth understanding of fade mitigation techniques, including signal processing fade mitigation technique (FMT) and power control technique. It explains how switching from higher spectral efficient modulation to lower spectral efficient modulation can help manage fade.

This course has been developed by Prof. Kalyankumar Bandyopadhyay from IIT Kharagpur for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://nptel.ac.in/courses/117105131.
