4-6 HOURS

NPTEL

width=This course covers the comprehensive analysis of mechanical stability models, with a special focus on the elastic buckling of columns under various boundary conditions. It provides an in-depth understanding of different approaches such as equilibrium, energy, dynamic, and imperfection. The course explains the application of large and small deflection theory to determine critical load and characteristics of equilibrium. It also introduces the Euler column and its conditions of idealization. For instance, the course demonstrates how to derive the second order differential equation and find the critical load for a column with fixed ends. It further explores the concept of Euler Buckling Load, the derivation of the 4th order governing differential equation, and its application to columns with different boundary conditions, including those with elastic support.

This course has been developed by Prof. Sarat Kumar Panda from IIT-ISM for NPTEL. It is now accessible through Ansys Innovation Space courtesy of the partnership between Ansys and NPTEL, under the CC BY-SA license. For more details, visit https://nptel.ac.in/courses/105105217.
