The Ansys Innovation Space website recently experienced a database corruption issue. While service has been restored there appears to have been some data loss from November 13. We are still investigating and apologize for any issues our users may have as a result.

How to use the Newton-Raphson residuals option under Solution Information?

The total force imbalance during an unconverged sub-step is a contribution from all the nodes in the model. When the Newton-Raphson option is set to a specific non-zero number, say 2, ANSYS Mechanical stores the total imbalance coming from each node for the last 2 iterations in the form of a contour plot. The regions which contribute most of the imbalance are the problematic regions and are visually identified on the contour plots using the maximum probes. In general, it is recommended to set the Newton-Raphson option to 2 or 3 while running a nonlinear analysis so that in the event of an unconverged solution, this information may be used for debugging the convergence issues.
