How to fix convergence issues when using the pressure-based coupled solver for compressible flow through a porous medium?

This is a general limitation of this solver with strong body forces in a very limited region. It is documented for porous jump boundary conditions but also applies to porous zones with a high resistance. Typically, the convergence behavior is completely independent of all solver settings, the residuals stall at a very high level and the results can be unphysical. The only solution is to use the pressure-based solver with a different scheme than coupled, e.g. SIMPLE (depending on the specific problem). Compare with chapters “6.3.20. Porous Jump Boundary Conditions” and “29.3.1.4. Coupled” in the ANSYS Fluent 18.0 User’s Guide.
