Why does a large rotation frictional contact problem converge with a coarse mesh, but fail to convergence when mesh is refined on the curved surfaces in contact?

Assuming a generally well posed problem, the cause might be related to changes in the program controlled contact properties that are functions of the underlying element size. For example, contact stiffness, penetration tolerance and pinball will all change with a change in mesh density. If reducing the time increment does not resolve the convergence trouble, try calibrating the contact properties of the finer mesh to those of the successfully converged coarser mesh.
