We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

How can I extract a camber line/surface for my airfoil? Can I do this with SpaceClaim?

A true midline feature is not yet available in SpaceClaim. In the meantime, ICEM can be used to generate the midline curve, or set of curves. The Create/Modify Curves > Create Midline feature iunder the ICEM Geometry Tab Accepts 2 curves and generates the midline. 1. Make sure your airfoil is represented by two curves – split according to a straight chord line drawn between the centers of the leading and trailing edges 2. Import your model to ICEM from SpaceClaim or Design Modeler using the File > Import Model menu 2. Under Create/Modify Curves > Create Midline, type “MIDLINE” in the text widget next to Part. (This will name the camber line) 3. Set Method to “By Pairs” 4. Select the upper and lower parts of the airfoil boundary as Side 1 and Side 2 respectively (order does not matter) 5. Click Apply to generate the camber line with part name “MIDLINE” 6. If you plan to reimport the modified airfoil geometry to SpaceClaim for further construction, you will have to create surfaces in ICEM from the upper and lower bounding curves and then delete the curves. (SpaceClaim does not support curve import, but curves will be available from the surface boundaries.) 7. Once the two surfaces (on either side of MIDLINE) have been createdin ICEM under new part families and all the curve parts deleted, you can save the ICEM project. This will generate the geometry file (*.tin). The (.tin file can be imported to SpaceClaim directly.
