We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

(Zemax) Requesting Help for Fresnel Lens Simulation

Hi, my name is Peter Jeon, and I'm a master's student in aerospace engineering.

My current research involves fresnel lenses and now I need to verify the performance of fresnel lenses using the simulation.

The senior in my lab recommended that I use Zemax, so I'm currently taking crash courses  on Zemax, but am still having difficulties in conducting my simulation.

Example of the simulation I wish to conduct:

Ray tracing simulation of the fresnel lens

Performance analysis of the fresnel lens.

My desired simulations are separated into two parts: Part 1) Whole Lens Analysis and Part 2) Sectioned Lens Analysis

      Part 1) Whole Lens Analysis

Objective: Detect the rays at the focal point.

The specifics of my simulation is as follows:

      Lens:

      Fresnel lens diameter (inch): 24.4

      Lens thickness (inch): 0.244

Groove per inch of the lens: 100

       Transmission(%): 85

      Lens Material: Acryl

      Setup:

Ray source & Lens distance (in): 12.2

      Lens & Image(Ray detector) distance (in): 12.2

Ray: Total 100,000 uniformly distributed rays

I also attached an image regarding the simulation.

      Part 2) Sectioned Lens Analysis

After this simulation, I'm planning on varying the lens area(by cutting the lens into circular sectors of different angles) and conduct the simulation again.

The plan is 'to create initial fresnel lens from the Part 1 above -> export the lens to SOLIDWORKS -> modify the lens into desired sections -> import the modified lens back into Zemax -> conduct simulation'.

Objective: Detect the rays at the focal point for each variation of the fresnel lens.

Setup: The setup is identical to Part 1 above.

I'm new to this software, and I know that the information that I wrote may not be enough to conduct the simulation that I wish to perform.

So if anyone can help me with this, it be very helpful for me.

Please provide step-by-step explanation to achieve my goals.

I would like to conduct Part 1 successfully and then move on to  Part 2.

Any comments of recommendations regarding my simulation are welcome.

      Thank you in advance :)

      Hi Jeonh,

Thank you for reaching out to us and reporting the design you want to perform with Zemax with such a detail! Going through the courses is a very good starting point!

Additionally, I would highly suggest to go through our Knowledge base articles: Zemax Knowledgebase there several articles that can hlp you create your design and specifically for the Fresnel lenses I would suggest this one: How to model a Fresnel lens in OpticStudio

Finally, you can also check the sample files within Zemax installation folder (..\..\..\Documents\Zemax\Samples): if you search within the non-sequential folder "fresnel", you will be able to find several example files:

Good luck with your desing and feel free to come back with any additional questions.

      Kind Regards,

      Niki
