      Hi, guys

What is the difference between importing an IDF file and an ODB++ file in ANSYS?Will the things they import be different?

      Hi Tomas,
IDF/IDX are PCB extend components, IDF require edf and ldf files, but there are no trace information.
ODB++/IPC2581 is recommended as they include the trace information.

         Hi Joey,

I did import the ODB++ file, however, by doing so, I found that only the PCB trace information was imported, and the other components on the PCB were not imported. If I import the IDF file, all components can be imported. Is this reasonable?

          Hi Tomas,

it is reasonable. ODB++ file should be imported into a PCB primitive Icepak object, while IDF can be imported directly. Here is a more detailed definition of IDF.

If you need more help regarding your sepecific files, please submit a service request and I'm happy to help you!

          Best regards,

          Joey

Intermediate Data Format (IDF) – IDF 2.0 and IDF 3.0
Board File (.emn, .bdf) - data on board dimension and component positions.
Library File (.emp, .ldf)- data on component sizes, thermal and electrical properties.

          Hi Joey,

If I want to import the trace information and component information of a PCB board, does this mean I need to import both ODB++ and IDF formats?"

      Hi Tomas,

Both formats are used to import layout ECAD designs to Ansys Electronics Desktop. You shouldn't observe differences if the two models are identical. However, since both of these types will go through translation before being imported to AEDT we recommend to inspect the models for any incosistencies. Usually, the ODB++ format is preffered for ECAD imports.

        Hi GioF,

Is this the same in classical Icepak?

        Best,

        Tomas
