What is the benefit of using shaft cross section over solid cylinder cross section in torsion resistant component design?

A shaft cross section (hollow cylinder cross section) has more material distributed at radius further from the rotation center, and as a result, with the same amount of material, a hollow cylinder cross section has a higher polar moment of inertia, thus provides more resistance to torsion.
