SubscriberI have a similar question. I need to generate a mesh from scratch, that is I do not have a CAD available and need to start from beginning. What is the best tool to generate a decent hex mesh?
I used to use Fluent many years back. At that time I used Gambit meshing. Now I come back after many years and the state of affairs at Ansys is confusing and conflicting. Gambit is gone and now they have a multitude of tools for meshing. The one that was suggested to me was generate geometry in SpaceClaim and then mesh it in Fluent using watertight scheme. I think this scheme is suitable for those who have no idea how meshing is done, so the scheme is tailored for very difficult meshes and inexperienced users.
In most of applications geometry to be meshed is straightforward and can be meshed with bricks(hexes). To generate this horrible mesh with large number of elements at boundaries and relatively coarse mesh inside using watertight scheme is a bad idea. It seems one can generate geometry and mesh in multiple tools within Ansys. So what should one do?

Ansys EmployeeIn Fluent meshing, we have guided workflows for both watertight geometry and faulty geometry. But however, meshing in Fluent is capable only for 3D geometries. Please refer to the user's guide for more information on guided workflows : https://ansyshelp.ansys.com/account/secured?returnurl=/Views/Secured/corp/v212/en/flu_ug/tgd_user_workflow_guided.html

SubscriberContinuing the confusion of Ansys, this comment answers none of my questions. Yes, I am talking only about 3D geometries, but 2D-3D is not my question. Could Ansys not prepare a simple document which compares the numerous meshing schemes they sell?

To answer your question specifically "What is the best tool to generate a decent hex mesh?" - you could use Fluent Meshing, watertight workflow. The workflow is guided, so yes, inexperienced users can also use it. This does not mean, experienced users cannot use it. Please refer to the capabilities of customizing the workflow in the user's guide.
You have not given any details of the geometry... mesh requirement- other than you want to create a hex mesh. If it is just a simple hex mesh, you can use Ansys Meshing as well.
Please start a new thread for your discussion on a specific topic. Thanks!
