Previously, I've used an edu license of SClaim through an Ansys vendor. I teach furniture engineering and CAM / digital manufacturing. I know SClaim from previous positions when I was still in the industry, and looking to transforming our software to SClaim within the school. All I (we) need is Spaceclaim, not the full Ansys package.

However, this vendor says no more edu licenses are handed out, but pointed me to the full Ansys edu package. After switching I was happy, but now that I found out no exporting is possible I am stunned. A lot of my teaching material is based on dxf / step exports for manufacturing. Lasercutting, CNC milling etc require these kind of files.

I tried to get in touch with Ansys but they do not support any student software so they cloed the door imediately. Is there a way I can get my hands on the translator software? I am even willing to pay something for it, but if this is all students get all my hard research and work is done for nothing..

      Kind regards, Steven

PS: yes I've seen other topics but they were closed for replies so couldn't comment over there.

It is true that the free Ansys Student license, which includes SpaceClaim, has no ability to save in any neutral file format.  Years ago, the free Ansys Student version of SpaceClaim had a limit of 50 bodies, but could save in all neutral files.  Then one year, they changed it to allow unlimited number of bodies, but limited saving to the .scdoc format only.

Ansys has various licenses for Academic institutions. Research licenses have no limits and have a purchase and annual cost. Teaching licenses have some limits and cost less. Student licenses have the most limits and are free. Contact Ansys and request a quote for Research and Teaching licenses for you and your lab.  Students can use the free license on their personal computers to do some design work, and bring their .scdoc file to the lab to export to neutral files.

      Thanks Peter.

To add, "Student" is the free version, so shouldn't be used for teaching: it's for home use by the students, or anyone else who wants to learn the software. The "Teaching" bundles are for class use, and finally "Research" is more-or-less full commercial software with some limits on usage. If you use the "contact-us" option on the ansys.com page ask to be put in touch with the local Academic team. If you refer to this thread hopefully that'll avoid any issues: let me know. Alternatively post your email address and institute and I can talk to the local Academic team to get your local equivalent to get in touch: I don't know where you are.

Hi Rob, unfortunately I never had a response from Ansys. Weird, I would expect for a company to call me several times after I've showed interest in their product.. Not a big fan of posting my email all around the internet, but since you are an admin you should be able to see it in my profile :) Institute is a vocational school for furniture making in the Netherlands.

I've messaged a colleague, she's very efficient so you should hear back from the local team.
