I have done a static structural analysis of a dam where I analysed the self weight and hydrostatic pressure effects and now i need to do a transient thermal analysis to simulate the thermal load.

Is it possible to do this mantaining the same model, meaning the same mesh nodes? 

I would like to convert the strucutral elements of the mesh SOLID186 and SOLID187 to the thermal elements  SOLID87 and SOLID90, and therefor keep the nodes. This would simplify the post processing of the results and would allow me to combine the effects of the self weigh, hydrostatic pressure and tehrmal variation.

You don't have to do any extra work, just drop a Thermal Model on the Static Structural Model and the same mesh will use SOLID186 in the Structural solution and SOLID90 in the Thermal solution.  I show Steady State Thermal, but the same holds for Transient Thermal.
