Typically they refer to hydrodynamic loads in a structural case but they could also mean a lot of different things depending on the type of analysis you are running.

My problem with surface load defects appeared when doing a SMART crack growth analysis (Workbench).
The error message I get is:

SMART Crack propagation failed. The reason can be the presence of Surface Effect loads in the propagation region. Please try to use Direct FE loads instead.
I have used direct FE loads, but the results is the same.
