Structural optimization – adaptive mesh refinement (beta) failure in 2024R1

      Hello,

I am currently trying to perform a structural optimization of a large structure where it would be very beneficial to use the beta feature called "Adaptive mesh refinement" (can be found under solution of structural optimization). The thing is, after the initial run of topology optimization (which runs perfectly fine), I get the "A failure occurred inside the mesh refinement module" without further explanation. Is there a documentation regarding this feature or which logs should I access to gain insight? So far I haven't been able to find anything helpful.

I have tried to simplify the model itself (remove springs, remote points and even connections; unite the separate bodies etc.) and change the mesh settings (enable adaptive sizing, disable additional mesh controls). However, none of these changes have helped. I have also tested the feature itself (adaptive mesh refinement) on a simple cantilever beam, which worked perfectly.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

      Hi Martin,

Can you share the snapshot of gemoetry? What if you use other options for mesh refinement like sphere of influence etc. instead of Adaptive Mesh Refinement?

Also, please refer to the following post: “A failure occurred inside the mesh refinement module” (ansys.com)

      Dear Ashish Khemka,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I am unable to share the geometry in any way. It is a simple, but large FE model of car body of a specific vehicle. There are many nodes (>100k even with big elements) and I need to refine the mesh where the resulting material will be kept,  which is not known beforehand. Even when I tried to reduce the analysis to just having a geometry (without springs etc.), it still wouldn't work and I would get the aforementioned error.

Also, thank you for the post, but I've already seen it and haven't been able to make it work. As I have stated before, the beta feature works perfectly fine on a smaller-scale fea, but fails at my case.

Let me know if there is anything else I can try. Thanks in advance.
