When I export step files from zemax they don't appear to be formatted correctly. The header section looks like this -

ISO-10303-21;

HEADER;

vs from my professor or step files created in solidworks -

Any ideas what settings are messed up in my Zemax? I can get the step file to import into solidworks but it isn't quite right.

Thank you for resching out to us! All the settings are described in our help file: The File Tab » Export Group » CAD Files. Also consider checking or unchecking the Parasoli libraries since this might be another way to properly export your file:

Turning off the parasolid libratries creates a header like this – 

ISO-10303-21;
HEADER;
FILE_DESCRIPTION ((), ‘1’);
FILE_NAME (‘ ’, ‘2024-11-28T13:21:28’, (‘Unknown’), (‘Unknown’), ‘HarmonyWare STEP v2.0.6’, ‘HarmonyWare Translators’, ”);
FILE_SCHEMA ((‘CONFIG_CONTROL_DESIGN’));
ENDSEC;

Still not quite right. 

I have the same settings on Zemax 2023 on my work computer and it works fine. For school we have 2024 R1.03, did somthing change between these 2 versions for STEP files?

Hi Subscriber,

I am not too sure what might have changed between the Student versions. I would also suggest to try the latest version 2025 R1, and see if you get the same results: Ansys Zemax OpticStudio Student - Free Software Download
