Hello,
I want to simulate the wind response of a flat plate in still water. What are some options I have for doing this? The condition I want to simulate is the dynamic translational+rotational motion of the body due to transient wind loading. There is a bit of CFD and hydrodynamics involved in this so I am looking for suggestions on how i can go about this? Is there a way I can use a single ANSYS tool or couple different tools to analyse the motion of a floating object?Â

Depending on what you're after have a look at AQWA and Fluent. For the latter you're looking at needing VOF and moving mesh, possibly with overset. I'll leave you to review the courses in Learning for details on the terms.Â

May 7, 2024 at 8:51 amAalif MohammedSubscriberThanks rob! I have already looked at the multiphase VOF model in fluent but a problem I am encountering is that the solid body in fluent is static and does not move due to the forces acting on it. I want the body to be at the water surface and tilt and rotate slightly due to wind impact. I find options to prescribe motion eg using dynamic meshing -SDOF but i am not sure if the forces on the module due to wind will have any effect on its motion. Will I be able to simulate motion due to aerodynamic forces in fluent using an overset mesh?

If you use 6DOF and tell it to react to the forces it will. Check the overset moving mesh example in the Fluent Help. It's a "something" falling off an airplane but other than water being a little denser it's much the same as you need.Â
