Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the write-merge-profile function in Ansys Fluent 23R1. I used this feature to export data along a predefined line, and I need clarification for my analysis.
- Are the exported data values cell-based or node-based?
- Are the values interpolated onto the line, or do they represent the value of the cut cell or the nearest node?
Your insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!
Best regards,
Carl

I'd use xy plots to export line data. It's interpolated from the cells as the line doesn't exist in the mesh. A profile would be facet data from a surface which is stored in Fluent's data but will be a function of cell and (possibly) boundary values.Â

Thank you for your response! I appreciate the clarification regarding the use of xy plots and profiles. However, I have already exported my data using the write-merge-profile function, and I want to make sure I interpret the data correctly:
- For the exported data along the predefined line, does Fluent interpolate the values directly from the surrounding cells, or are they derived based on the closest cell center or node?
- If interpolation is involved, what method does Fluent use for the interpolation (e.g., linear, inverse-distance)?
- Would you recommend re-exporting using xy plots for more precise line data, or are the write-merge-profile results sufficiently accurate for detailed analysis?
Thanks again for your help!

Data on post processing surfaces is interpolated using cell/facet values, check the documentation to see if any details on methods is given. This is why we often create interior surfaces in the mesh if we plan post processing before turning on the geometry tool.Â
I would use the most straightforward method to get the data I wanted: as I don't know why you chose profiles over xy lines or what you intend to do with it I can't recommend either approach.Â
