We have an exciting announcement about badges coming in May 2025. Until then, we will temporarily stop issuing new badges for course completions and certifications. However, all completions will be recorded and fulfilled after May 2025.

I have a mulit-channel component where I want to optimize some parameters like gap and length simultaneously, to obtain a a certain amout of power P_A, and P_B from two of the ports A, B.
I am choosing these as parameters and defining FOM=(|S_{A}|^2 - P_A)^2+(|S_{B}|^2 - P_B)^2. Is this a correct approach? Can we do optimization on gap and length for this FOM in this case? Results do not make sense at all.

      Hi,

You can use this approach in PSO. It is important to note that PSO can only optimize single valued objective functions, so it won't work if you have a broadband source. Unless you average over a wavelength range, or find another way to combine the results from a range of wavelength.

I would like to add that PSO is not highly effective for multi-objective, multi-parameter optimizations. You can increase the number of members/generation size to scan a larger parameter space. But a lot of the times we recommed using more powerful optimization algorithms within Python/MATLAB for these cases.
