I have ANSYS 2021 R2 and I want to simulate an open channel wave for my grade work but when I'm configuring the inlet the Fluent window closes.
February 17, 2022 at 8:50 pmadolfonsoSubscriberThis error happens when I click on "Apply" btw
February 18, 2022 at 8:11 amKeyur KanadeAnsys EmployeeAssuming your mesh is of good quality, please make sure first you have defined materials correctly. Then check if you are able to run without wave bc. Run only vof and make sure it runs correctly. Then use wave bc.
Please go through help manual for more details 47.4.1. Multiphase Model Dialog Box (ansys.com)
You can also find some videos of vof online.

April 6, 2022 at 3:03 pmAlex_ICEPRONAVSubscriberWe are having exactly the same issue when doing something very similar. Is there a solution or something more to check in order to help solve this?
We did run it successfully beforehand in VOF only with a straight water level with transient time.
Tanks in advance.

April 8, 2022 at 10:35 amRobForum ModeratorI've seen this when moving from an old case with some VOF settings and then turning on the waves in a more current release. Try running one a single core, otherwise you may need to set up from the mesh.
April 8, 2022 at 11:02 amAmine Ben Hadj AliAnsys EmployeeAlways start from Mesh: that is what I always recommend. Also do not use Expressions in the definition of the Waves: there was a small issue which we fixed recently.
April 11, 2022 at 3:14 pmAlex_ICEPRONAVSubscriberThanks for the prompt answer!
In the first try I changed an already steady time running case, to transient and then tried to add the waves. It crashes every time I check the Open channel wave BC checkbox and hit apply.
After this I tried as Rob and DrAmine suggested, to try from scratch, from geometry, on a very simple set-up and the same issue appears, when using only one core or multiple. No expression was used for the waves definition, just a very simple shallow or gravity wave, I tried multiple combinations.
Thanks both for involvement.
P.S. I tried the same thing from scratch on an older version (2020) and no problem occurred, but this issue I experience on 2 different computers with the same version: 2021 R2. Is there an additional change in the latest version that would explain this?
April 11, 2022 at 4:51 pmAmine Ben Hadj AliAnsys EmployeeCan you try with 22R1?
April 12, 2022 at 8:07 amAmine Ben Hadj AliAnsys EmployeeI tested now in 22R1 for simple dummy mesh (pipe) steady state open channel flow: I am able to patch my flat free surface and no issues did occur.
April 12, 2022 at 8:10 amAmine Ben Hadj AliAnsys EmployeeAnd it works with a wavy structure (so transient).
April 12, 2022 at 2:22 pmAlex_ICEPRONAVSubscriberJust installed 2022R1 version and now it works fine. I did not try any simulations yet, but the program doesn't crash anymore when applying wave BC.
Thanks again.
