Problem – thermal expansion difference between an idealised pipe model and a solid body pipe model

I've been conducting some piping analysis and have been experimenting between the use of a solid body model or an idealised pipe model using a cross section and line body. I noticed that the idealised pipe model expands less than would be expected.

I've conducted a simplified experiment with 1m sections of both an idealised line body model and a a solid model. Both have the same material properties and are subjected to the same temperature increase. both are fixed at one end and allowed to expand freely at the other.

But the idealised line body model does not expand to the correct amount.

Can anyone help me understand why?

nnCan you please check the model? I applied same thermal condition load to both solid and pipe models and the result were same:nnnRegards,nAshish Khemkan

I'm using a pipe temp for the idealised pipe and a thermal condition for the solid modeln

I also find that if I try to, I can't apply a thermal condition to the idealised model it won't allow it.n

nThe Thermal Condition option applies a uniform temperature throughout the body and the Pipe temperature option applies a linear temperature distribution along thickness.nAre you not able to apply thermal condition to the line body? Use body selection filter when selecting the line body.nnRegards,nAshish Khemkan

Aha! thanks! i knew it had to be a simple misunderstanding somewhere.n
