As part of my 5th year group project I am studying coating formations of Titanium Particles impacting a Titanium substrate at high velocity.
The simulation has been set up using the Laminar Solver with the Energy Equation enabled, the Dynamic Mesh setup for a deforming mesh at an input velocity of 1000m/s. When solved transiently the particle is seen to move towards the substrate as expected. However for some unknown reason the particle simply passes through the substrate as if it wasn't there. I have spoken to one of my supervisors about the issue to no prevail.
Would anybody have any insight into the issue? There are papers available that show what I'm trying to do is possible, but there is no information into how the simulation was setup.

November 9, 2017 at 8:25 pmRaef.KobeissiSubscriberHello Whats the boundary condition on the substrate? It should be set as wall. If the substrate is represented as a meshed domain it will be treated as a fluid domain and the particles will just travel through it.
It would be great if you could provide some pictures and more information around your setup.

The substrate is set as a wall and the cell zone conditions for it are solid. The substrate is meshed (I have played around and haven't been able to remove the mesh on this section.)
The setup is simply a closed system, a sphere above the substrate, only one particle is present as this simulation is merely a proof of concept before I build it up and work towards the final model. Â
When using the post processor and viewing the time-step animation the particle simply passes through the substrate without even a hint of interaction, I suspect you are correct, and the substrate is being treated as a fluid domain. I'll look into it, can you think of anything obvious I may have missed? I'm no expert in CFD.
