SubscriberHi everyone,
I am working on a 2-D parametric aerodynamic analysis of an airfoil profile and flaps, part of our FSAE project. the relative geometric parameters that define the configuration are defined in the workbench. (angle of attack, gap, ovelap..)
what ansys optimization app and method would you recommend to use for this wide range of configurations, and to be through as well and not done manually to get the best lift/drag ratio?
Thank you

Forum ModeratorI'd probably look at the Adjoint and optimisation tools in Fluent. So, not the approach you're taking via Workbench. How is a different question, and not one I can answer.Â

SubscriberHi Rob, yes i want to use the possiblities for optimization by fluent, but the input parameters are of the design modeler, not sure they can be accessed within fluent.Â

Forum ModeratorThat's the whole point. There are two approaches:Â
- The parameter option (your current choice) which needs a load of models to then give a response surface. You then find the "best" solution and refine the surface to work out the parameters. Advantage is you see all of the design space, disadvantage is it's lots of runs.Â
- Adjoint and morphing move the Fluent mesh to get the "best" result. You don't generally see the rejected designs. Advantage, it's computationally very efficient; disadvantage you don't see the response surface and poor choice of guidelines can result in some interesting results.Â

Subscriberyet to use the second method, using the same defined parameters at the geometry level, is possible? also is it limited to a local optimum? thank you!

Forum ModeratorThe second method uses stuff in Fluent rather than DM so avoids CAD changes and remeshing. I don't know the full set up or limitations, please refer to the User's Guide & Theory Manual.Â
