SubscriberIs there anyone tried to simulate a crack propagation through multiple layer of material with different fracture toughness? With some load the crack will initiated at one point and propagating through different layer, any idea on how to simulate this kind of problem?

Ansys EmployeeHello, this could potentially be done with the VCCT crack growth method since it is valid for a bi-material scenario; note that the crack path has to be predetermined with this method. You can read more about the VCCT method here: https://ansyshelp.ansys.com/account/secured?returnurl=/Views/Secured/corp/v222/en/ans_frac/Hlp_G_STR_VCCT.html
In contrast, while SMART crack growth allows for automatic crack propogation, since it is based on J integral and Stress Intensity Factor parameters, it is not valid for a bi-material scenario (those parameters fundamentally are not suited more than one material).

SubscriberHi David, thanks for the reply. VCCT is valid for bi-material scenario, but as you have known predefined crack path is required. The objective of the analysis that I want to simulate is the response of crack path (how the crack might grow) when there is different material layer/pattern/arrangement of structure ahead of the crack tip.
