Meshing Stuck at 5%

      Hello everyone,

I’m facing an issue with meshing in ANSYS Mechanical (2024 R2). My model has a structured, repetitive geometry—a hexagonal lattice pattern covering a flat surface. The material is defined as structural steel, and the geometry is imported as a solid part.

Every time I attempt to generate the mesh, the process gets stuck at 5%, particularly while meshing a specific face of the structure. The issue consistently occurs at the same stage, as indicated in the progress status.

      I’ve tried:

      • Resetting and re-importing the geometry.
      • Tweaking the mesh size and method.
      • Ensuring no overlapping or problematic surfaces in the CAD model.

Despite these attempts, the problem persists. Has anyone encountered a similar issue with repetitive or complex geometries like this? Any guidance on how to resolve this or identify the root cause would be greatly appreciated!

I have checked the geometry via SpaceClaim and cleaned the model using the Repair and Prepare tools, including the tools like Repair Faces, Remove Small Faces, and Automatic Healing. Despite these efforts, the problem persists.

      Hey,
The thickness of the wall seems to be very small when compared to the full model. It seems to be around <0.1mm. The meshing is taking so long because of too many elements being generated.

You can try 2 things one is cut the model to small part and check if the meshing succeeds for that small part and how many elements are being generated for that cut part.
Second is to use shell elements for such small thickness bodies.

Let me know how it goes.

      Hi Mohan,

Thanks for your response! I tried cutting the model into smaller parts, and the meshing succeeded. It seems that the issue was related to the complexity of the full model.

      Appreciate your help!

      Hey,

Great to hear that, closing the thread here.
