MESH FOR HELICAL STRAKE

      Hi,

I am working on the simulation of fluid pasted various cylindrical body such as smooth cylinder body, helical straked cylinder body and cactus shaped cylindical body. I am trying to compare their effectiveness in mitigating vortex shedding and drag. The structure all have the sample diameter (0.5m) and domain (5m x 15m).

The smooth cylindrical body gave an expected plot showing the lift and drag curve but the other structures didn't. I don't know if i am correct or not as i am relative new in fluent with respect to this.

For the smooth structure, i used the edge sizing and inflation mesh (inflation option: First inflation layer thickness, first layer height: 0.03m, Maximum layer: 40 and growth rate: 2.5). I applied the same mesh to the other structures but i don't know if the result i am having are good.

Please i need advise on the best mesh methods and other settings to achieve a good result on the other structures.

Below are my contour plots for the structure.

      SMOOTH STRUCTURE

      CACTUS SHAPED

      HORN-STRAKED

      HELICAL-STRAKED

Those contours look a little odd. How good is the mesh quality? What is the domain inlet velocity?

Thanks Rob for your prompt response.

The inlet velocity for each of the structure was taken to be 0.021m/s.

Below are the mesh for each of the structures.

      SMOOTH STRUCTURE

      CACTUS SHAPED STRUCTURE

      HORN-STRAKED STRUCTURE

      HELICAL-STRAKE

Please, if my meshes are wrong, can you help with best way to go about doing a good mesh.

      Thanks

I'm not even sure how you've managed to create a mesh like that. Have a look in the Mesher Help and do the tutorials.
