Making Crack in Solid Body

Hello, I want to make crack in Solid body, basicly just split some region in a part, but not spliting the whole part. Just to make an edge and two faces to use pre-meshed crack in WB. Screen from SpaceClaim added to better see what I mean. When I use split it splits the whole body with a plane, I dont want it. Thanks in advance for help.

Hi,

You don't have to split the body here just create a small notch throughout the thickness of the component or as required, for a premeshed crack just create a named selection of crack front nodes (in your case select the edge at the V corner of the created notch and convert it to nodal named selection) and give this as an input to crack front. Similarly, create nodal named selection for top and bottom face of crack of the created notch.

Create a coordinate system at the crack tip such that X axis is the direction of crack growth and Y axis is normal for the crack face. Use this premeshed crack in SMART crack for crack growth analysis.

I am aware of this solution, but I need to grow the crack manualy using MTS etc. So I need to split the body.

Hey,
A simple workaround could be to add another plane perpendicular to the existing one (red line) and split the body usign that new plane. Now make the split that you want near the notch (bottom half) with the previous plane. Combine the 2 halfs again to get the full geometry.
