Re the settings, they depend on what you are trying to solve. So, is the crush/impact speed/weight/mass sensible?  Clicking on help should take you to the tutorials, videos and documentation: they're an excellent starting point.

Student version is enough to learn how Explicit Dynamics works on a small region of geometry. It will not be adequate for a full model of your packaged product.  Find out if your University has an ANSYS Research License that you can use.

If the University does have an ANSYS Research License, they probably have it installed on a computer with more resources (cores, memory, storage) than your personal computer. Therefore, you want to learn how to use Windows Remote Desktop so you can log into that University computer from your personal computer.  That is better than RSM.

Can you explain little more what you think with: "It will not be adequate for a full model of your packaged product."?

Student license has a 32,000 node or element limit.  That is sufficient for small models.

If you try to mesh the product and the packaging, you will easily exceed this limit by a factor of 10 to 100.
