About the shoe sole with airpocket example:

The deformation is deviatoric or volumetric? Can anyone explain?

      Hello,

For the 3rd example here: Volumetric and Deviatoric Behavior Homework | Ansys Courses

Without air-pocket, the majority of the resistance offered by the body is deviatoric, as the body is free to deform. So, the elastic modulus is the source of the majority of resistance.

With air-pocket, the majority of the resistance the body offers is volumetric, as free deformation is not allowed. So, the bulk modulus is the source of most of the resistance.

      Regards,
