Correct boundary conditions and settings for rotating shaft?

      Hello,

I am designing a rotating shaft to minimize deflection and I am not too experienced with FEA. What I will be changing will most likely be the bearing types and the location of them. The shaft will have bearings near both ends of the shaft and a load will be on one end. Will the bearings be considered a fixed support on the FEA model or will it be something else? If the bearing types are different how will I model this in Ansys?

      Hello,

You can use a connection called a Bearing to model bearings.

That connects a face or edge to ground with a springs that you can enter the bearing manufacturer's specification for bearing stiffness.

      Regards,

      Peter

      Hi,

How are you planning to minimize the deflection - the reason to ask is to see what changes/ things you are looking for?

So to minimize deflection I will be changing the diameter of the shaft, the bearing span or location of the bearings, and the bearing types. The shaft will be designed for a spindle on a CNC machine. Are there any other parameters I should focus on? I don't think material will be a major factor but I will also focus on that.

      Hi,

Thanks for the update. I think most of the changes will be within geometry and I believe you will be studying the change for one bearing type and then change the bearing type. I have no other suggestions.

Dear peter,nnI would like to know why the bearing connection doesn't work in static structural analysis system. i am having an error. nerror message being A solver pivot warning or error has been detected in the UX degree of freedom of node 10972 located in ***************. This is usually a result of an ill conditioned matrix possibly due to unreasonable material properties, an under constrained model, or contact related issues. Check results carefully. You may select the offending object and/or geometry via RMB on this warning in the Messages window. with a warning message as follows Damping defined in bearing(s) is not applicable for static structural analysisnIt however worked in transient structural. but what is the science behind the modeling of bearing as a connection. Connection from ground to body. but the ground is assumed to be at the center of the face that i am choosing, not somewhere below the shaft where the fixation of the bearing would ideally be, is there an option to choose the exact point as ground? or is this modeling sufficient?n
