Convergence Issue – Thermal Electric Conduction Simulation

      Hi there,

I am trying to simulate a scenario in which I have a 1mm dia copper wire attached to a 2 mm thick alumnium plate of 60 cm H and 30 cm L. I am using Steady State Thermal - Electric solver in the Workbench and have applied convection on the coil and Aluminum plate plus 8V to one end of the copper wire as shown. The simualtion does not converge and gives error at the end. What could be the possible issue or mistakes from my end.

      Much Appreciated :)

Did you apply a current to the other end of the wire?  Is the electrical conductivity temperature-dependent?  If you ramp the current on slowly the solution should converge, but it's helpful to turn on Line Search.  Sometimes the default converge criteria are way too small, preventing convergence.

I did not apply any current. Just Applied 8V on one end of the wire. Conductivity is not temperature dependent, however I added the isotropic resistivity properties for the assigned materials.

How can I turn on the line search and also change the converge criteria?

That's probably why it didn't converge.  There was no load.  You have to apply a current to produce joule heat.  Line Search can be turned on with the command lnsrch,on if you're not in the Mechanical gui.

      Yeap, it converged now.
Thank you so much for your assistance.

One more thing, how can I make it transient thermal-electric simulation?

antype, trans.  Make sure you have density and specific heat specified for the materials.

You can also use the coupled field transient solver for this (transient thermal electric)

      See here for more info

Thank you so much Dlooman and Erik.

Unfortunately after adding the command nothing really changed. What is the mistake here by me?
Also, for the transient themral solver I can’t get the electric loads option in it. So I’m really not sure how were you recommending to use that?

      Much appreciated :)

        Ansys:
It is called coupled field transient system for transient thermal-electric - this is done setting Yes thermal and for electric to conduction - See image below)

Oh, got it now. It worked perfectly and got almost my desired results.
      Thanks a bunch @Erik and @Dlooman.
