SubscriberHello,
I am currently working on a school project related to radial turbines. For the project, I have to perform CFD on the turbines using ANSYS BladeGen and Vista RTD. However, the mass flow rate and RPM that I can input are very limited. I can only run the sim when mass flow is 0.058 kg/s and the RPM is 190,000, both which are unrealistic. What am I doing wrong here?

Ansys EmployeeThe range of operating point inputs that can be accepted in all the Vista tools is based on an appropriate specific speed range for that device. The specific speed is a function of the mass flow, rotational speed, head rise (or head drop) and fluid density. The specific speed range for Vista RTD is not provided in the documentation, but the user can find examples of an appropriate specific speed range in the literature. Refer to the NASA report SP-290, "Turbine Design and Application", Volume 3 which discusses design of radial inflow turbines.
If the requirements of your design fall outside the applicable specific speed range, it may indicate that modifying the rotational speed and using a multi-stage approach may be needed to achieve the desired performance goals.
