Basics about modal analysis

      Hi, I wanted to know a very basic things about modal analysis. In modal analysis, structure generates different modes and natural frequencies. How it generates without any excitation? It is like, a plate is fixed with bolts. Without application of load, it is ganarting stress/strains/defromtion etc. Please help me to undersatind. This might be basic question.
