Antenna Gain

Is the antenna gain reported in HFSS dB or dBi? It is written in dB on the 3D gain plot but some people said it was originally calculated in dBi. Is it correct? for example, in this picture gain of the antenna is equal to 5.7 dB or 5.7 dBi ?!

      Hi Hanieh,

Gain is 4*pi*U/Pacc (the ratio of an antenna's radiation intensity in a given direction to the total power accepted by the antenna). When reported in dB, it is taking 10*log10 of Gain.

I understand there might be different conventions for Gain in different industries. In HFSS, all definitions of the antenna parameters are available in online help. I suggest you check the formulas to avoid any ambiguity. Simply search for Antenna Parameters in HFSS help. Then you can select any of the quantities and check the formulas that HFSS uses for calculating the respective quantities.

        Hi Faezeh Jan,

Many thanks for replying to my question. I have designed a circularly polarized patch antenna. I need to design a circular polarized  1*4 linear array of it. But my axial ratio is not below 3 dB. It would be appreciated if you could have a look at my design and give me some advice. I can send you by email or in Linkdine. ????

        Kind regards,
        Hanieh
