“AnsysWB Module has stopped working” when viewing results in Mechanical

I have a static structural model in Ansys Mechanical 2021R1. I've been working on this project for a long time. Once I've created the inputs, I use an HPC to run them, and then I load the .rst files back into Mechanical where I post process and plot stress contours etc. This usually works without a problem and I have done this many times within the same project file/model.

However, I am now encountering an issue. When I load the solution by reading the .rst file, I cannot do any post-processing. When I click to display anything, e.g. Total Deformation or Von Mises Equivalent Stress, Mechanical briefly shows the result but then promptly crashes and force closes (see image below).

I have searched the forum for similar issues but haven't found a solution that works for me. I have tried clearing the %temp% and %appdata% folders, defining a scratch directory in Options and updating my graphics drivers. My machine is managed by my IT department and I think that there was recently an OS update (Windows 10 v21H2 19044.4046), I am not sure if this has contributed to the problem.

Any help/understanding would be greatly appreciated. I really need to post process these results. Please help.

      Many thanks,

      Barn

I have figured out some more detail which I thought might be useful to add:

I have another project file where the solution data is saved within the project, I have previously viewed the results and stress data etc. On this file I can open up Mechanical and view the solution/results just fine without any crashes.

HOWEVER, if I clear the generated data on the solution and re-read the results file (the same file.rst, which it was reading before without a problem) it immediately crashes again.

So it seems to be that the issue is with how Ansys is reading the file.rst into the project, this wasn't happening a month ago but happens now. Does anyone know why/how this might be happening?

Update: I have installed 2023R1, and loading the project and the results (file.rst) files in this version works fine. There are no crashes, and I can view my results, plot stress contours, etc.

2021R1 still crashes, however. I would still like to get to the bottom of this issue if possible. I need 2021R1 to create input files for use on my organisation's HPC.

If anyone has any ideas how to solve this issue I'm having with 2021R1 please let me know. Many thanks.

Occasionally the user settings become corrupt.

      Try the following:

      Exit Ansys completely.

In the File Explorer address field

      Enter: %APPDATA%

      …An Explorer Window will open

      Open the Ansys folder…

If you are using verison 2021R1, then the folder will be v211

Rename the v211 folder to v211.old for the appropriate version.

Hi Gary, thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I have already tried this and it did not change anything. My 2021R1 still crashes when loading results in mechanical.

Does the crash occur consistently in 2021R1, even for projects solved locally?

Do any other actions casue the crash?
