Ansys Discovery Initialization Failure

Hello.  I am new to ansys, and this is a fresh install for educational use.  we are running a flex server for a few seats at a school.  Trying to run Ansys discovery on one of the computers results in the above message.  all other ansys products we have installed startup and validate just fine.  so far i have made sure the computer is fully updated (not likely a direct x issue)  i also looked at another forum post that linked a patch for older versions that had validation and launch issues, but that patch does not seem applicable for R2.  Please let me know if you have any ideas or need more information.

      Some information:

      • Windows 10 enterprise 22h2 64bit
      • I7 chipset
      • 32gb ram
      • nvidia quadro p1000 graphics card
      • intel UHD Graphics 630 (onboard graphics)
      • Windows up to date as of 12/14/2023
      • Ansys Discovery 2023R2

      Hello Trenton,

Please try below mentioned solutions, let me know if it helps.

      Solution 1

Reinstall Discovery for the version you are having an issue with

      Solution 2

Goto the Nvidia website then download and install the latest driver for your Graphics card

      Solution 3

In windows Settings -> Display -> graphics settings (link at the bottom)
Click Browse, navigate to the Discovery.exe file for your version (C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v222\Discovery\Discovery.exe)
Click Options and set to 'High Performance'

      Solution 4

In 'Device Manager' -> Display Adaptors
Right click and Disable any adaptors other than the Nvidia one

      Solution 5

If your Nvidia driver version is 52x then goto the below link and search for an older driver. Download and install the latest driver that's older than 52x:-

      https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

If this solution doesn't work then follow solution 2 again to get back to the latest driver

      Solution 6

Open Discovery as admin by right clicking on the shortcut in the start menu, select more and then 'Run as Administrator'

      Solution 7

Disable any Antivirus / Security software running on the client to test if that is causing the issue. If it does resolve it then work with your IT department to make the relevant exceptions so you can run without it being disabled.

      Solution 8

From the Start menu, type %appdata% in the search field and press enter. That opens a window. In this window:
Rename the folder Ansys as Ansys_old

From the Start menu, type %temp%\ in the search field and press enter. That opens a window. In this window:
Rename the folder .ansys to .ansys_old

From the Start menu, type %appdata% in the search field and press enter. That opens a window. In this window:
Rename the folder Discovery as Discovery_old

From the Start menu, type %temp%\ in the search field and press enter. That opens a window. In this window:
Rename the folder Discovery to Discovery_old.

      Solution 9

      Under 'Language' settings:-
Click 'Date, time & regional formatting' and change the 'regional language settings' to English US.
Check the 'Windows display language' is set to something to match the country of the regional language settings set above, EG: English
Check the 'Preferred languages' is set to something to match the country of the regional language settings set above, EG: English
Make sure that the decimal system is dot "." but not comma "," (under 'Additional Settings')

These settings can resolve a lot of issues in Ansys software, so if you are happy to leave them like this please do so. But if it hasn't resolved your issue you can change them back again.

      Solution 10

      Repair / reinstall the prerequisites:-

Run appwiz.cpl to open Programs and Features
Scroll down to the list of Microsoft C++ packages
Right click on each one and select change, then the repair option.

If any fail to repair, or if repairing doesn't resolve the problem, then you can reinstall them from the issue files here:-
      C:\Program Files\ANSYS Inc\v222\prereq
and run all the *vcredist_x64.exe files
(you may find you have a multiyear version installed like 2015-2019 that will stop version 2019 installing. In this case you can uninstall the multiyear version in Programs and Features and install 2019 from the prereq folder)

      Solution 11

If there is a later version of Discovery available, please download and install it to test if that version works

Charudatta, after trying some of your suggestions, as best as i can tell it appears to be some compatibility issue with the version of discovery and nvidia quadro p1000 graphics card or driver.  I will double check later, but from the sounds of it the user had tried back installing an earlier version of driver software for this card to no success.  Our current solution was to disable the nvidia card and use the onboard intel video adapter.  When we disabled onboard graphics and left the nvidia card running we got a yellow error (which i forgot to screen grab) about graphics compatibility, followed by the above warning.  I will update with more detail if i find different results.
